ICAR IIHR Director Visits Farmers’ Fields at Jalige, Devanahalli Taluk and Interacts with Chilli and Rose Growers

Under the DST-funded project “Enhancing Livelihood Security of Small-holder Farm Women of Karnataka through Horticultural Interventions using Pluralistic Extension Approaches,” front line demonstrations of new F1 chilli hybrids developed by ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR-IIHR), namely Arka Dhriti and Arka Nihira were demonstrated and other released variety Arka Gagan were undertaken at Jalige village Devanahalli Taluk, Bengaluru Rural District for comparative analysis and popularisation. Seedlings of the rose variety Arka Savi were also provided to selected women farmers for result demonstration.

The demonstrated chilli hybrids are high-yielding and tolerant to Chilli Leaf Curl Virus (ChLCV) and Phytophthora root rot. Arka Nihira and Arka Dhriti are suitable for both fresh and dry chilli markets, producing pendent fruits that turn deep red on maturity. The hybrids have a fresh yield potential of 8–10 tonnes per acre, with yielding 2.5–2.8 tonnes per acre as dry chilli. Arka Gagan, suited for the fresh chilli market, produces upright, smooth and highly pungent green fruits.

Dr. Tushar Kanti Behera, Director, ICAR-IIHR, visited the chilli demonstration fields and reviewed the performance of the new hybrids. During the visit, the Director interacted with the participating farmers and obtained their feedback on crop establishment, growth, fruit characteristics and overall field performance. The farmers expressed satisfaction with the performance of the new chilli hybrids and appreciated their growth and yield potential.

The field demonstrations were carried out under the guidance of Dr. Ramya H. R., Scientist and PI of the project and Dr. Naresh P., Scientist, with farmers receiving recommendations on appropriate crop management practices at different stages of cultivation. The chilli crop established well under field conditions, exhibiting good growth and fruiting, and has now reached the harvesting stage

The Director also visited the Arka Savi rose demonstration field and interacted with the rose growers. During the field visit, Dr. Bhaskaran, Principal Scientist demonstrated scientific pruning practices in rose and provided hands-on guidance to the farmers on proper pruning techniques for maintaining healthy plants and improving flowering and productivity.

The visit facilitated direct interaction between the farmers and ICAR-IIHR scientists and provided an opportunity to assess the performance of the demonstrated technologies under farmers’ field conditions. Such field demonstrations, coupled with regular technical guidance and scientist–farmer interactions, contribute towards promoting the adoption of improved horticultural technologies and enhancing livelihood opportunities of farming communities
