ICAR–National Meat Research Institute, Hyderabad, organised an awareness programme on El Niño and its potential impact on livestock, a Gram Sabha under Vigilance Awareness Week, and a Khet Bachao Abhiyan along with an input distribution-cum-animal health camp under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC) at Chilkur Veterinary Hospital, Dist: Suryapet Telangana today.
As part of the DAPSC initiative, 50 beneficiaries belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category were provided with essential livestock inputs, including mineral mixture, deworming tablets, concentrate feed and umbrellas, to support animal health, improve livestock productivity and promote the welfare of farming families.
The awareness programme focused on the potential effects of El Niño and changing climatic conditions on livestock, particularly the challenges associated with heat stress, fodder and water scarcity, and animal health management. Farmers were sensitised to adopt appropriate preventive measures, ensure adequate drinking water and nutrition, maintain proper housing and ventilation, and follow timely deworming and veterinary health practices.

The Gram Sabha conducted under Vigilance Awareness Week emphasised transparency, accountability, integrity and public participation in government programmes. The Khet Bachao Abhiyan highlighted the importance of protecting agricultural resources, promoting sustainable farming practices and strengthening the livelihoods of farming communities.
The programme was graced by the Dr S. B. Barbuddhe, Director, ICAR-NMRI, along with other senior officials. The dignitaries highlighted the importance of scientific livestock management, preventive animal healthcare and the effective implementation of welfare-oriented programmes for farmers.
The animal health camp provided an opportunity for farmers to interact with veterinary professionals and receive guidance on livestock health, nutrition, disease prevention and management. The distribution of essential inputs was aimed at strengthening the capacity of SC livestock farmers and encouraging the adoption of improved animal husbandry practices.

The initiative reflects ICAR-NMRI’s commitment to inclusive agricultural development, technology dissemination, farmer welfare and the empowerment of Scheduled Caste communities through need-based interventions under DAPSC. The programme also reinforced the importance of coordinated efforts among research institutions, animal husbandry officials and farming communities for sustainable livestock production and rural livelihood enhancement.
A total of 110 beneficiaries participated in the programme.
