DG ICAR Reviews Research and Farmer-Oriented Initiatives at ICAR-CIRG, Mathura

Dr M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR, visited the ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom, Mathura, on 2–3 October 2026. During the two-day visit, he reviewed the Institute’s research, technology development, animal production and health activities and took an overview of its research initiatives and farmer-oriented programmes in the field of goat farming.

Dr Jat inspected the animal feed unit, hydroponic fodder production unit, Integrated Farming System (IFS) units and farms housing different goat and sheep breeds, including Barbari, Jamunapari, Sojat and Jakhrana goats and Muzaffarnagari sheep. He interacted with the scientists and reviewed the ongoing research and technology development activities, appreciating their efforts towards advancing goat farming.

As part of the visit, Dr Jat participated in a tree plantation programme at the Institute and emphasised the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable development in agricultural and livestock production systems.

Dr Jat subsequently interacted with scientists, technical officers and administrative officers of ICAR-CIRG and held detailed discussions on the Institute’s future research priorities, technological innovations and technology transfer initiatives. He emphasised the need to align research and innovation with emerging challenges and ensure that technologies developed by the Institute reach farmers effectively and in a timely manner.

He also interacted with farmers from CIRG-adopted villages and Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) members from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. During the interaction, he distributed goats to beneficiaries under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe schemes and enquired about their experiences with goat-based livelihood activities. He also took feedback on the benefits received and the impact of goat farming on their livelihoods and socio-economic conditions.

The visit generated enthusiasm among the scientists and staff of ICAR-CIRG and provided valuable guidance for strengthening research, technology development and extension activities. The suggestions and directions provided by Dr Jat are expected to further strengthen the Institute’s efforts towards farmer-oriented innovations and reinforce its role as a centre of excellence in goat research, technology development and extension.
