A three-day training programme on “Scientific Production and Post-Harvest Management of Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)” was conducted from 21st to 23rd, October 2026 at the ICAR Conference Hall, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Mizoram Centre, Kolasib under AICRP (Spice) Project with the objective of enhancing farmers’ knowledge and technical skills in scientific turmeric cultivation and post-harvest management.
The training programme was attended by 11 farmers (comprising 3 male and 8 female) from Kolasib, Thingdawl and Meidum villages of Kolasib districts. The programme focused on improved production practices, including selection of quality planting materials, land preparation, planting techniques, nutrient management, weed control, and integrated pest and disease management. Emphasis was also placed on identifying the appropriate harvesting stage and adopting scientific post-harvest practices such as curing, drying, grading, packaging and storage to maintain rhizome quality and minimise post-harvest losses. The importance of processing and value addition for improving product quality and enhancing farmers’ income was also highlighted. The programme provided an opportunity to strengthen participants’ understanding of improved turmeric production technologies and the importance of proper post-harvest handling for sustainable spice production.
During the sessions, essential agricultural inputs (micronutrients and turmeric rhizomes) were distributed to 10 farmers to support efficient crop management practices. Overall, the three-day training programme was highly successful in building awareness among farmers regarding improved cultivation techniques and value addition of turmeric. The training was coordinated by Dr. Vanlalruati, Sr. Scientist (Horti-Flori.), Dr. Lungmuana, Sr. Scientist (Soil Sc.), Mr. P.L. Lalrinsanga, Scientist (Aquaculture) and Dr. Blessa Sailo, Sr. Scientist (Vety, Public Health), Dr. A.L.Jat, Sr. Scientist (Agromony) and Dr. Vikas Pali, Sr. Scientist (Genetics and Plant Breeding).
