A three days training programme entitled “Role of custom hiring centres in mechanization of jute based cropping system” was organized at ICAR-CRIJAF, Barrackpore during 15-17 February, 2023 under SCSP Programme 2022-23. Considering the importance of the training subject in the present agricultural scenario, total 20 nos. of trainees (specially youths) of SC community from three villages (Goaldah, Swarupnagar Block, North 24 Parganas and Taraberia & Bhabagachhi, Amdanga Block, North 24 Parganas) were enrolled in the training programme. The main objective of the training programme was to provide first-hand information The main objective of the programme was to provide first-hand information on operation, maintenance and repair of oil engines and different farm equipment to the trainees. In the inaugural session, Dr. M.S. Behera, Principal Scientist & Nodal Officer, SCSP explained the
trainees about the importance of farm mechanization in agriculture and particularly in jute based farming system for drudgery reduction, better input utilization and enhancement of production. The training was a two way interactive mode i.e. theory and practical.

The topics covered during the training programme were importance of farm mechanization in jute based farming system, role of custom hiring center in farm mechanization, systems and operation of oil engine, use of tractor and power tiller in agriculture, improved production technology of jute, safe use of plant protection equipment’s and maintenance of health and safety in work place etc. In practical session the identification of engine parts, dismantling of parts and re-assembling of parts of diesel engine was carried out by the trainees in the presence of expert and trainer. Trainees also sensitized about the tractor and the matching farm implements, their operation and maintenance. In the valedictory session, Dr. M.S. Behera, Principal Scientist & Nodal Officer, SCSP, ICAR-CRIJAF, Barrackpore emphasized about advance training on Agriculture Machine Operation for skill development and employment generation. He also distributed certificates and inputs (Farm Implements) to the participants. Dr. R.K. Naik, Senior Scientist & Course Director was also present in that occasion and distributed the tool kits (dal wrench, ring wrench, sly wrench, screw driver etc.) to the trainees. The Co-course directors of the training Drs. Shamna A. and Lavanya A.K. actively co-ordinated the entire training programme.
