The PAU’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Moga, organized a field day on “Surface Seeding-cum-Mulching Technique” in the village Indergarh of district Moga on March 7, 2024 under the scheme “Promotion of agriculture mechanization for in-site management of crop residue in the state of Punjab”. About 107 farmers attended the field day that was organized in the fields of Sardar Paramjit Singh, son of Sardar Nishan Singh, who had sowed the wheat crop with the surface seeding-cum-mulching technique on an area of 23 acres without burning the paddy straw.

Dr Manpreet Jaidka, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), explained the objective of conducting the field day. He also talked about preventive measures to be followed to safeguard the wheat crop from the terminal heat stress. He apprised the farmers of management practices in oilseed and pulse crops.

Dr Amandeep Singh Brar, Associate Director (Trg.), KVK, Budh Singh Wala, Moga, explained the role of Krishi Vigyan Kendra in transforming the lives of the farmers in the district. He also put light on technical aspects of surface seeding-cum-mulching technique as an economical and efficient residue management technique.

Dr Ramandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor (Processing & Food Engineering), emphasized the pivotal importance of agro-processing and self-marketing for Farmer Producers Organizations. She also elaborated on various packaging techniques, proper labelling and the FSSAI quality mark, role of branding in agricultural produce marketing, elucidating marketing principles and citing successful branding examples.

Dr Sandeep Kumar, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), provided valuable insights on Integrated Insect and Pest Management in rabi crops, summer crops and kharif crops.

Dr Harkanwaljot Singh delivered a lecture on climate smart technologies in agriculture system and their role in developing climate resilient system.

Sardar Paramjit Singh enlightened the participating farmers about the use of surface seeding-cum -mulching technique and various benefits fetched by him in cultivating wheat crop with this method without burning paddy straw. All the farmers actively interacted with the experts about various aspects related to crop residue management. Later, Dr Jaidka extended a vote of thanks.
