The PAU Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Jalandhar, in collaboration with the Department of Soil and Water Engineering, PAU Ludhiana, organized an educational field day 26.07.2024 dedicated to soil, water, and energy conservation. The event attracted 63 farmers eager to learn about sustainable agricultural practices from leading experts.
Dr. Angrej Singh, Senior Agronomist from the Department of Soil and Water Engineering at PAU Ludhiana, kicked off the event with an informative lecture on soilless cultivation techniques for crops like cucumber, tomato, and pepper. He detailed the benefits and practical applications of soilless agriculture in boosting crop productivity and resource efficiency.
Dr. Sudhir Thaman, a Scientist from the same department, provided an in-depth discussion on modern irrigation methods, including drip and sprinkler irrigation. He emphasized the technical aspects, needs, and benefits of these methods in conserving water and improving crop yields. Dr. Thaman also introduced farmers to hydroponic systems, including the innovative aeroponics system, which uses mist to deliver nutrients directly to plant roots.
Er. Lupinder Kumar, Sub-Division Soil Water Conservation Officer from the Department of Soil and Water Conservation, Jalandhar, highlighted the department’s initiatives and achievements in promoting soil and water conservation practices in the region. His presentation underscored the importance of these practices for long-term agricultural sustainability.
Dr. Harwinder Singh Buttar, Plant Pathologist from KVK Nurmahal, delivered a comprehensive lecture on managing diseases and insect pests in Kharif crops. He provided valuable insights into identifying, preventing, and controlling common pests and diseases, helping farmers protect their crops and yields.
Er. Rupinder Chandel concluded the expert sessions with a lecture on water-saving techniques. He covered topics such as rainwater harvesting structures, alternate wetting and drying, laser levelling, and bed planting, stressing the importance of these methods in conserving water and supporting sustainable agriculture.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Sanjeev Kumar Kataria, Deputy Director of KVK Jalandhar, who expressed gratitude to the experts for their invaluable contributions and to the farmers for their enthusiastic participation.
