Farmers in Punjab are well-acquainted with intensive cropping systems, particularly the rice-wheat rotation. However, this practice often leads to nutrient deficiencies, prompting high fertilizer usage. Research by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, reveals that skipping phosphorus fertilizer in paddy, if already applied to wheat, does not reduce yield.
In an awareness camp held on July 5, 2024, in village Dugri, PAU-FASC Tarn Taran encouraged farmers to adopt this practice.
Dr. Parvinder Singh, Incharge, welcomed attendees and outlined FASC Tarn Taran’s initiatives.
Dr. Parminder Kaur educated farmers on identifying and treating foot rot disease with Trichoderma asperellum, while Dr. Parminder Singh Sandhu emphasized good agronomic practices and nutrient management for paddy and basmati crops.
Farmers received guidance on addressing Fe and Zn deficiencies in paddy and the benefits of using bio-fertilizers.
PAU literature on bio-fertilizers and kharif season cultivation was distributed. The event concluded with a visit to local demonstrations where phosphorus fertilizer was not applied, showcasing successful implementation of PAU’s recommendations.
