The ICAR-Research Complex for Eastern Region at its Ranchi Centre organized one day training programme on “Management and Care of Horticultural Crops” on 27th March, 2023. The programme was sponsored by the ICAR-AICRP on Fruits (SCSP). The training programme was formulated by seeing the opportunity and interest of SC farmers for establishment of new fruit orchards in the Lawalong block, Chatra district of Jharkhand. Four villages (Lawalong, Chani, Madandih, Baramatu) were selected for technological interventions in 10 acre area for establishment of new mango orchards with the support ofKVK, Chatra andJharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (JSLPS), unit
Lawalong, Chatra. During the training, farmers were trained on the different aspects of mango cultivation namely – fruit orchard floor management, water and nutrients management, propagation, canopy management and plant protection measures. The farmers were also acquainted with the tools and equipment needed for horticultural crop management. The farmers were actively involved in the training programme through field based practical as well as group based discussion. In his concluding address, Dr.R.S. Pan, Head, ICAR-RCER, Farming System Research Centre for Hill and Plateau Region, Ranchi stressed on the adoption of multitier planting systems with emphasis on intercropping with legumes for higher income generation under rainfed condition. He also suggested the farmers to implement horticulture based entrepreneurship models. Vegetable soybean seeds, micronutrients and organic sea weed extract were distributed to participating farmers for demonstration purpose.A total of 48 farmers of Chatra and districtof Jharkhand participated in the programme.
