The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana has conducted a five-days vocational training course for SC community on “Mushroom Cultivation as a Subsidiary Occupation” from 04-11 September, 2023 in which 35 SC women and farmers from different villages of district Sangrur participated enthusiastically.

At the outset, Dr. Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Sangrur extended a warm welcome to the participants and shared the importance and economics of mushroom cultivation as a subsidiary occupation. He told that mushroom cultivation not only provides a source of food but also helps in productive utilization of crop residues. He also talked about different activities and outreach programmes of KVK Sangrur for the welfare of farmers and rural youth.

Dr. Ravinder Kaur, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) acted as coordinator of this training programme and deliberated on nutritional and medicinal use of mushrooms in our diet. She discussed different types of mushrooms which can be grown throughout the year. Further, she delivered technical lectures on climatic conditions, material requirement and crop management practices during its cultivation. She also demonstrated different steps of mushroom cultivation like composting, spawning, casing, etc.

Dr. Jaspreet Kaur, Mycologist (Mushroom), PAU, Ludhiana delivered lecture on disease and insect management in mushroom cultivation and also shared different steps /ways to boost the mushroom quality and yield.

Dr. Prahlad Singh, Horticulture Development Officer informed about different subsidy schemes and marketing of mushrooms.

Sh. Sanjeev Aggarwal, LDM and Sh. Jagdish Kalra, Financial Literacy Counsellor shared the details of financial assistance and loan schemes for mushroom farming.

The trainees were taken to an exposure visit at the mushroom farm of S. Baljit Singh at village Kakra where they got an exposure of AC Mushroom Unit.

The progressive mushroom grower S. Kuldeep Singh also shared his practical experiences with the trainees. Literature on mushroom cultivation was provided to the trainees.
