Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ropar, under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana, took a significant step in environmental conservation by organizing a one-day awareness camp aimed to mobilize college students and combat the issue of crop residue burning. The event took place on October 31, 2023, at ASBASJS Memorial College, Bela (Ropar), and witnessed active participation from 100 students.

Dr Satbir Singh, Deputy Director (Training), KVK Ropar, enlightened the youth about various aspects of crop residue management and its crucial role in environmental conservation. He emphasized the detrimental effects of residue burning and discussed the initiatives undertaken by KVK Ropar to create mass awareness among the youth on this critical issue. Dr Singh also underscored the importance of managing paddy residue using modern farm machinery such as surface seeders, happy seeders, smart seeders, MB ploughs, rotavators, mulchers, and balers, among others.

Dr Satwant Kaur Shahi, the college Principal and Chief Guest of the event, encouraged the students to share the valuable information they acquired regarding crop residue management. She thanked KVK for educating students about these sensitive environmental issues.

As part of the programme, Dr Princy, Assistant Professor of Home Science, organized student competitions in various categories, including essay writing, slogan writing, and poster making. The outstanding entries in each category were recognized and honoured.

In closing, Dr Princy extended her thanks to the college authorities and the students for their wholehearted support, which played a crucial role in making the awareness program a resounding success.
