Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kapurthala, in collaboration with Department of Vegetable Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana conducted vocational training course titled “Protected Cultivation and Nursery Raising of Vegetable Crops” from December 04 to December 08, 2023. Dr Ruma Devi, Asstt. Prof. (Veg. Sci.) initiated the programme by highlighting the significance of maintaining healthy vegetable nurseries and adopting protected cultivation techniques to ensure quality vegetable production. Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Assoc. Prof. (Veg.Sci.) discussed in detail about different protective structures like walking tunnels, low tunnels, poly houses and cultivation of different vegetables like, tomato, capsicum, brinjal and cucumber in these structures. Traditional and high-tech nursery raising methodologies were also explained in training programme. Apart from this, practical sessions were also organized for trainees on protected cultivation and nursery raising at KVK vegetable demonstration units. Dr. Harinder Singh, Associate Director (Trg.) motivated the trainees to produce pesticide free vegetables for home consumption in their kitchen gardens. He also inspired trainees to adopt nursery raising as a subsidiary occupation. Mrs. Avneet Kaur, Assoc. Prof. (Home Sci.) shed light on importance of vegetables in human diet and prevention of anaemia using green leafy vegetables. She also gave demonstration on solar drying of green leafy vegetables at household level and sweet & sour vegetable pickle. Dr Bindu , Prof. (Agri. Eng.) explained the primary processing and packaging of vegetables. Dr Suman Kumari, Asstt. Prof. (Pl. Prot.) discussed the disease management in nursery of vegetable crops under protected conditions and management of insect-pest of vegetable crops. She also emphasized on good soil health by managing nematodes and other soil born diseases. On the concluding day, Dr. Dilpreet Singh, Asstt. Prof. (Veg. Sci.) motivated the farmers to adopt protected cultivation technology to enhance their income. He also facilitated the trainees with grow bags and hand spray pumps. At the last, certificates were distributed to the participants.
