Under the campaign being conducted by the Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana to increase the production of soft crops and Director Extension Education, Dr. Under the direction of Gurmeet Singh Buttar ji, Krishi Science Center, Bathinda organized an awareness camp on ‘Comprehensive pest and disease management in Narme’ on 06.09.2023 at village Mansa Khurd of the district.
During this camp Dr. Ajitpal Singh Dhaliwal, Professor (Animal Science), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda, said that the soft crop is very good this time and farmers should be alert as the attack of pink weevil is being seen on the soft crop. So farmers should keep surveying their fields every day and spray the pesticides recommended by the university at weekly intervals. He also made the farmers aware about the scientific methods to earn more profit from dairy farming, poultry and goat rearing occupation.
Dr. Gurmeet Singh Dhillon, Professor (Extension Education), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda spoke about the safe and judicious use of agricultural chemicals. He emphasized on adoption of eco-friendly pest management techniques. He encouraged the farmers to adopt good farming practices for soft farming. He discussed the various extension activities and efforts undertaken by the University and KVK for the betterment of the farming community of the district.
Dr. Vinay Singh, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda educated the farmers on identifying pests and natural enemies in the field. Insect infestation and disease symptoms were also shown using pictures/photos and flash cards. Farmers were also taught methods of early detection and monitoring of pink borer and whitefly infestations. In addition, they were made aware of scientific and recommended methods of pest management in cotton. Winter vegetable seed kits were also provided to the farmers.
Finally, the farmers of the village shared their experiences. The scientists accompanied the farmers and visited the fields where they were taught about the identification and prevention of soft insects.
