PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ropar, under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and ICAR-ATARI, Zone-1, Ludhiana, has successfully concluded its intensive week-long vocational training program on goat farming. The training, which took place from Dec 17 to Dec 23, 2024, witnessed participation of 30 rural youth from district Ropar.

During the inaugural sessions Dr. Satbir Singh, Deputy Director (Training) at KVK Ropar highlighted the significance of adopting scientifically proven practices in goat rearing for better economic returns and shed light on breeds and breeding in goats.

Dr. Aparna, Associate Professor of Animal Science and the Technical Coordinator of the training, outlined the comprehensive curriculum, which covered key aspects such as feeding, housing, breeding, management, health assessment of goats along with, record keeping, Zoonosis, waste management and non conventional feed resources like azolla. The program also included hands-on practical sessions on ear tagging, dentition and azolla cultivation. Participants were introduced to the concept of establishing a live fencing by planting moringa and neem trees, which will serve as a sustainable source of nutrients.

Interactive session on use of indigenous practices in goats was another key feature of the programme. The Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry department Ropar Dr Jasdev Singh was the special invitee in the concluding session to edify participants about various schemes of the department like NLM, brucellosis, PPR & ET vaccination, brucellosis testing etc.

Dr. Satbir Singh concluded the program by encouraging participants to apply the knowledge gained and contribute to the development of sustainable and profitable goat farming practices in their respective communities.

The successful completion of this training program marks a significant step towards transforming goat farming into a viable and lucrative enterprise for the rural youth of Ropar.
