Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda, under the guidance of Dr Gurmeet Singh Buttar, Director of Extension Education at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, organized a Farmer Field Day centred around ‘Comprehensive Pest and Disease Management.’ This event occurred at Kili Nihal Singh Wala village in the district and was part of a project funded by ICAR – National Integrated Pest Management Centre, New Delhi.
Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Professor (Extension Education), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda, shed light on the safe and responsible use of agrochemicals. He stressed the importance of adopting environment-friendly pest management techniques and encouraged farmers to embrace best farming practices. Dr. Gurmeet Singh also discussed the various extension activities and initiatives undertaken by the University and KVK to uplift the local farming community.
Dr. Vinay Singh, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda, educated farmers on identifying pests in their fields. The session included pictures, photos, and flashcards to illustrate insect infestations and disease symptoms. Farmers were trained in early detection and monitoring of pests and were made aware of scientifically recommended pest management methods for different crops.
Dr. Sarvpriya Singh, Assistant Professor (Fruit Science), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda, inspired farmers to establish organic home gardens and adopt the university’s kitchen garden model.
As part of the programme, farmers were provided with 13:0:45 fertilizer to enhance their farming practices. Towards the end of the event, farmers from the village shared their experiences. The scientists also accompanied the farmers to their fields, where they were taught how to effectively identify and control paddy insects.
