On November 26, 2024, a successful field day was organized at Tosham village of Gudihanthnoor Mandal, Adilabad District to address the pressing issue of pin worm infestation in Tomato crop. The event aimed to create awareness among farmers about the nature of the damage caused by pin worm and to demonstrate effective control measures. Dr. M. Sunil Kumar, SMS (Horticulture) along with Dr. G. Shivacharan, SMS (Extension), KVK, Adilabad began the field day with an interactive session, where in the farmers were educated about the life cycle of the pin worm, its feeding habits and the extensive damage it causes to tomato crop, particularly through fruit boring. This pest, known for its rapid reproduction and resistance to chemical pesticides, has been a significant concern for tomato growers in the district. A major highlight of the event was the demonstration of pheromone traps. Farmers were shown trap catches of pin worm adults, which provided clear evidence of the pest presence and activity in their fields. This visual proof highlighted the efficacy of pheromone traps as a non-chemical method for monitoring and managing pin worm populations. A successful case study of a progressive farmer who effectively managed pin worm using integrated pest management (IPM) practices was also shared. The demonstration included cultural practices such as crop sanitation, use of pheromone traps for mass trapping and the application of biopesticides for effective control. These methods not only reduced pin worm infestation but also minimized reliance on chemical pesticides, ensuring safer and more sustainable tomato production. Farmers appreciated the practical demonstration and realized the importance of adopting pheromone traps and other IPM practices to combat pin worm effectively. The field day concluded with a discussion on implementing these practices on a larger scale to improve productivity and reduce losses, fostering a sense of confidence and empowerment among the farming community.
