Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Langroya, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar organized a training cum awareness camp on crop residue management under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana on 18-10-2023 at its campus for the benefit of progressive farmers, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), Registered Farmers Group (RFGs) and Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACs).
Dr. Gurjinder Pal Singh Sodhi, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana graced the occasion as chief guest of this programme while Dr. Gurdev Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer, Department of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare and Ms. Paramjit Kaur, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar were the special guests.
During the welcome address Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Langroya, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar highlighted the harmful effects of burning of crop residue and laid stress on the proper management of paddy residue through the use of farm machinery.Dr. Bons discussed in detail about the recommended paddy residue management technologies.
Dr. Gurjinder Pal Singh Sodhi, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana in his presidential remarks also spoke about the ill effects of crop residue burning and urged all to encourage farmers to adopt improved technologies being promoted by PAU, Ludhiana. He stressed upon the farmers to incorporate the paddy residue into the soil, which would improve the soil health and was ecofriendly technology. He also spoke on the need for adopting processing of agricultural produce for augmenting farm income.
Ms. Paramjit Kaur, Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies discussed about the different machines available with cooperative societies for the farmers and assured all support in this endeavor.
Dr. Gurdev Singh, Chief Agriculture Officer, Department of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare spoke on the need of proper utilization of available paddy straw management machinery in the district and sought active cooperation of all in curbing the menace of paddy straw burning.
Dr. Kamaldeep Singh Sangha, Project Director, ATMA discussed about the different schemes of their department for the welfare of the farmers.
On this occasion, technical lectures were also delivered by experts from KVK Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. Dr. Baljit Singh, (Plant Protection) discussed about integrated pest management in straw managed fields, Dr. Arti Verma, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science) discussed about integrated nutrition gardening & use of paddy straw in mushroom cultivation, Dr. Kirandeep, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering)) informed the farmers about the different residue management machinery which is available for the use of farmers at KVK Langroya, Mrs. Renu Bala, Demonstrator (Home Science) gave information regarding formation of self help groups and FPOs and how it can help farmers/farm women in increasing their income and Dr. Gurinder Singh, Demonstrator (Animal Science) discussed about the use of paddy straw as fodder & in biogas plants.
Literature related to crop residue management and package of practices were provided to the farmers and crop residue machinery at KVK was exhibited.
