ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, established the first private rainbow trout production facility at Nongrum Mawphlang, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, in collaboration with Iatreilang Foundation Multipurpose Cooperative Society to create awareness among the local community and interested stakeholders about the socio-economic benefits of rainbow trout farming. ICAR-DCFR organised a demonstration-cum-workshop today, in collaboration with IFMCS and the Department of Fisheries, Meghalaya.

The Chief Guest, Dr. P.S. Shukla, Vice-Chancellor, North-Eastern Hill University, highlighted the need for capacity building and adoption of new aquaculture technologies and mentioned that NEHU will initiate a vocational training course in aquaculture, in collaboration with ICAR-DCFR.
Dr. Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-DCFR inaugurated the rainbow trout production facility emphasizing the potential socio-economic benefits of rainbow trout farming in the Coldwater regions of Meghalaya and encouraged the local community to harness the available resources for nutritional security.
Ms. A.L. Mawlong, Director, Department of Fisheries, and Shri. Tambor Lyngdoh, Chairman, SYNJUK, were also present during the programme.
During the demonstration workshop, dignitaries and participants were shown the vertical incubator hatchery, nursery setup, flow-through raceways, and filtration tanks. The institute plans to add post-harvest and upgraded nursery facilities in the next phase.
A total of 150 participants including scientists, fisheries officials, professors, community leaders, farmers, and students attended this event.
