Termite Control in Wheat Crop

Termites are a significant pest for wheat crops, particularly in rainfed and dryland areas of India. They attack wheat plants from germination to maturity, feeding on roots and stems, which can lead to severe yield losses if not managed effectively. Controlling termites requires a combination of cultural, biological, and chemical methods to protect your crop.

Identifying Termite Damage in Wheat

Early detection is key to effective termite management. Look for these signs in your wheat field:

  • Wilting and Drying Plants: Plants may suddenly wilt and dry out, even when there's sufficient moisture.

  • Hollowed Stems: Termites tunnel into the base of the stem and roots, hollowing them out. If you pull a damaged plant, it often breaks easily at the base.

  • Mud Tunnels: In severe infestations, you might see thin mud tunnels on the base of plants or on the soil surface leading to plants.

  • Patchy Growth: Infested areas often show patches of stunted, yellowed, or dead plants.

Cultural Control Practices

Good farm management practices can significantly reduce termite populations and damage:

  • Deep Ploughing: Ploughing fields deeply after harvest exposes termite nests and queens to predators and sunlight, destroying them.

  • Remove Crop Residues: Termites feed on dead plant material. Remove or deeply bury crop residues, weeds, and stubble from the field.

  • Proper Irrigation: Termites thrive in dry conditions. Adequate and timely irrigation can make the environment less favorable for them.

  • Use Well-Decomposed FYM: Ensure that Farmyard Manure (FYM) or compost is fully decomposed before applying it to the field. Undecomposed organic matter can attract termites.

  • Crop Rotation: Rotate wheat with non-host crops or crops that are less susceptible to termite attack.

Biological Control Options

Biological methods offer an eco-friendly approach to termite management:

  • Entomopathogenic Fungi: Fungi like Metarhizium anisopliae can be applied to the soil. These fungi infect and kill termites. Consult your local agricultural extension for availability and application guidelines.

  • Encourage Natural Predators: Birds, ants, and other insects can prey on termites. Avoid practices that harm these beneficial organisms.

Chemical Control Measures

When infestation is severe, chemical control may be necessary. Always follow label instructions carefully and wear protective gear.

Seed Treatment

Treating wheat seeds before sowing is an effective preventive measure against termites at the early stages of crop growth.

Soil Application

For existing infestations or in areas with a history of severe termite problems, soil application can be considered.

Insecticide Dosage per Hectare Method Chlorpyrifos 20% EC 2.5 - 4 litres Mix with 50-100 kg of sand or soil and broadcast evenly before last ploughing or at sowing.

Always ensure even distribution and incorporate the chemical into the soil immediately after application. Avoid applying chemicals during windy conditions to prevent drift.

Managing termites in wheat fields requires a proactive and integrated approach. By combining cultural practices, exploring biological options, and using chemical treatments judiciously when needed, farmers can significantly reduce termite damage and ensure a healthy, productive wheat harvest. Regular monitoring of your field for early signs of termite activity is crucial for timely intervention.
