Trichoderma is a natural, beneficial fungus that acts as a bio-fungicide, protecting your crops from many harmful soil-borne diseases. It helps plants grow stronger, improves soil health, and reduces the need for chemical pesticides. Understanding how and when to apply Trichoderma correctly is key to getting the best results for your farm.

Why Use Trichoderma?

Using Trichoderma offers several important benefits for your crops and soil:

  • Disease Protection: It actively fights against common soil-borne fungal diseases like damping-off, root rot, wilt, and blight caused by pathogens such as Fusarium, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia.

  • Plant Growth Promotion: Trichoderma helps in better nutrient uptake from the soil, leading to stronger root development and overall healthier plant growth.

  • Improved Soil Health: It contributes to a healthier soil ecosystem by breaking down organic matter and improving soil structure.

  • Eco-Friendly: It is a safe and natural alternative to chemical fungicides, making it good for the environment, beneficial insects, and human health.

When to Apply Trichoderma?

The timing of Trichoderma application is crucial for its effectiveness. It works best when applied early in the crop cycle or when conditions are favourable for its growth:

  • Seed Treatment: Apply just before sowing seeds to protect seedlings from the very beginning.

  • Nursery Application: Use in nursery beds or potting mix when raising seedlings to ensure a healthy start before transplanting.

  • Soil Application: Incorporate into the soil during land preparation or apply to the root zone of existing plants.

  • Environmental Conditions: Trichoderma thrives in moist soil conditions and moderate temperatures (ideally 20-30°C). Avoid applying during very hot, dry, or waterlogged conditions.

How to Apply Trichoderma?

Trichoderma can be applied in various ways depending on the crop and stage of growth. Here are the most common methods:

Seed Treatment

This method provides early protection to germinating seeds and young seedlings.

  1. Take the recommended quantity of Trichoderma powder.

  2. Mix it with a small amount of water to form a thick slurry.

  3. Evenly coat the seeds with this slurry, ensuring every seed is covered.

  4. Dry the treated seeds in the shade for 20-30 minutes before sowing. Do not dry in direct sunlight.

Soil Application

This method helps to establish Trichoderma in the soil, protecting roots throughout the growing season.

  1. Mix the Trichoderma powder with well-decomposed Farm Yard Manure (FYM) or compost. A good ratio is 2-5 kg of Trichoderma for 50-100 kg of FYM/compost.

  2. Moisten the mixture slightly and cover it with a jute bag for 3-5 days. This allows the Trichoderma to multiply.

  3. Broadcast the enriched FYM/compost evenly in the field during the last ploughing or near the root zone of standing crops.

Nursery Application

For healthy seedling development before transplanting.

  • For Potting Mix: Mix Trichoderma powder directly into the potting mixture before filling trays or beds.

  • For Drenching: Prepare a solution by mixing Trichoderma powder in water and drench the nursery beds or seedling trays.

Important Tips for Best Results

To ensure Trichoderma works effectively and provides maximum benefit, keep these points in mind:

  • Storage: Store Trichoderma in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Always check the expiry date on the packet.

  • Compatibility: Do not mix Trichoderma with chemical fungicides, especially copper-based ones, as they can kill the beneficial fungus. If chemical treatment is necessary, apply Trichoderma first and wait for at least 5-7 days before applying chemicals.

  • Moisture is Key: Trichoderma needs adequate soil moisture to grow and colonize the roots. Ensure proper irrigation after application.

  • Organic Matter: It performs best in soils rich in organic matter. Adding FYM or compost regularly enhances its activity.

  • Application Time: Apply in the morning or late afternoon to avoid strong sunlight, which can harm the fungus.

By following these practical application methods and tips, you can effectively use Trichoderma to protect your crops from diseases, improve soil health, and achieve better yields in a sustainable way. It's a powerful and eco-friendly tool for any farmer.
