Managing Gullidanda Weed in Wheat Crop

Gullidanda (Phalaris minor), also known as little seed canary grass, is the most problematic weed in wheat fields across India, especially in the northern states. It closely mimics wheat in its early growth stages, making identification difficult. If not controlled, it can cause severe yield losses, sometimes up to 50-80%.

Identifying Gullidanda

Early Stage: Looks very similar to wheat seedlings, making it hard to distinguish.

Later Stage:

  • Ligule: Long, membranous, pointed.
  • Auricles: Absent.
  • Leaf Sheath: Often purplish at the base.
  • Panicle: Dense, cylindrical, often purplish-green, resembling a foxtail.
  • Roots: Fibrous, shallow.

A key difference is that wheat plants have auricles, while Gullidanda does not.

Impact on Wheat Yield

Gullidanda competes aggressively with wheat for water, nutrients, sunlight, and space. It absorbs more nitrogen than wheat, leading to nutrient deficiency for the main crop. Uncontrolled Gullidanda can reduce wheat yield by 30-80%, depending on its density and the stage of competition. Its presence can also clog harvesting machinery and contaminate the harvested grain.

Integrated Weed Management Strategies

A combination of methods is most effective to control Gullidanda and prevent herbicide resistance.

Cultural Practices:

  • Clean Seeds: Use certified, weed-free wheat seeds.
  • Crop Rotation: Rotate wheat with non-cereal crops like mustard, gram, or berseem. This breaks the weed's life cycle.
  • Stale Seedbed Technique: Prepare the field early, allow weeds to germinate, then destroy them by light tillage or non-selective herbicide before sowing wheat.
  • Proper Sowing Time: Sowing wheat at the optimal time (mid-November) helps the crop establish well and compete better with weeds.
  • Optimum Plant Density: Maintain recommended plant spacing and seed rate to ensure a dense crop canopy that suppresses weed growth.

Mechanical Control:

  • Hand Weeding: Effective for small areas or when weed infestation is low. Best done 25-30 days after sowing.
  • Hoeing: Can be done in rows, but less practical for large fields.

Chemical Control (Herbicides)

Herbicides are crucial for Gullidanda control, but resistance is a growing concern. Rotate herbicides with different modes of action.

Pre-emergence Herbicides (applied before weed emergence):

  • Pendimethalin: Apply within 0-3 days after sowing.

Post-emergence Herbicides (applied after weed emergence, 25-35 days after sowing):

  • Sulfosulfuron: Effective against susceptible Gullidanda.
  • Clodinafop-propargyl: Another common choice.
  • Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl: Also widely used.
  • Pinoxaden: A newer option, often effective against resistant populations.
  • Metribuzin: Can be used, but check wheat variety tolerance.

Always use the recommended dosage and apply uniformly with sufficient water (300-400 litres per acre) using a flat fan nozzle.

To manage herbicide resistance, never use the same herbicide or herbicide group repeatedly. Alternate or combine different modes of action.

Preventing Herbicide Resistance

Gullidanda has developed resistance to many commonly used herbicides. To prevent this:

  • Rotate herbicides with different modes of action.
  • Combine chemical control with cultural and mechanical methods.
  • Use recommended doses; underdosing can promote resistance.
  • Monitor fields for herbicide failure and adjust strategy.
  • Avoid continuous use of the same herbicide group year after year.

Effective management of Gullidanda in wheat is crucial for good yields. By combining proper identification, cultural practices like crop rotation and clean seeds, and judicious use of herbicides with resistance management strategies, farmers can significantly reduce the impact of this stubborn weed and ensure a healthy wheat harvest.
