It appears as white, powdery patches on leaves, stems, and sometimes seeds, reducing plant vigour and yield. Symptoms and Identification

Recognising powdery mildew early is vital for effective control. Look for these signs:

  • White, flour-like patches on the upper and lower surfaces of leaves. These patches are usually circular at first, then spread and merge, covering larger areas.

  • Leaves may turn yellow, curl, and eventually dry up and fall off prematurely.

  • In severe cases, the white powdery growth can also cover stems, flower parts, and developing seeds, leading to poor seed quality and reduced market value.

  • The disease often starts on older leaves near the base of the plant and then spreads upwards to younger growth.

Factors Favouring Powdery Mildew

Certain environmental conditions and farming practices can increase the risk and severity of powdery mildew:

  • Temperature: Moderate temperatures, typically between 18-25°C, are ideal for the fungus to grow and spread.

  • Humidity: High humidity (above 70%) combined with dry conditions on the leaf surface (no rain or dew to wash off spores) promotes the disease.

  • Shade and Crowding: Shady, dense conditions within the crop canopy reduce air circulation, creating a favourable microclimate for the fungus.

  • Nitrogen Fertiliser: Excessive application of nitrogen fertilisers can lead to lush, soft plant growth, making coriander more susceptible to infection.

  • Lack of Air Circulation: Close plant spacing prevents proper air movement, trapping humidity around the leaves.

Prevention and Cultural Practices

Good agricultural practices are the first line of defence against powdery mildew:

  • Resistant Varieties: If available in your region, choose coriander varieties known to be resistant or tolerant to powdery mildew.

  • Crop Rotation: Avoid planting coriander or other susceptible crops (like cumin or fenugreek) in the same field year after year. Rotate with non-host crops.

  • Field Sanitation: After harvest, remove and destroy all infected plant debris to reduce the source of inoculum for the next crop.

  • Optimal Spacing: Maintain adequate plant spacing (e.g., 20-30 cm row to row, 10-15 cm plant to plant) to ensure good air circulation within the crop canopy.

  • Water Management: Irrigate in the morning to allow leaves to dry quickly. Avoid overhead irrigation late in the day, which can leave foliage wet for extended periods.

  • Balanced Nutrition: Use balanced fertilisers. Avoid excessive nitrogen application, which promotes lush, susceptible growth.

Chemical Control Measures

Fungicides can be effective if applied at the first sign of the disease. Always read the product label for correct dosage, application method, and pre-harvest interval (PHI).

  • Timely Application: Apply fungicides only when necessary, based on disease severity and weather forecasts, rather than on a fixed schedule.

  • Combine Methods: Integrate cultural practices with chemical or biological controls to reduce reliance on a single method and achieve long-term control.

Effective management of powdery mildew in coriander involves a combination of good cultural practices, regular monitoring, and timely application of appropriate fungicides. By understanding the conditions that favour the disease and acting promptly, farmers can protect their coriander crop and ensure a healthy, profitable yield.
