Brinjal Fruit Borer: Control Measures

The brinjal fruit and shoot borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) is one of the most destructive pests of brinjal, causing significant yield losses by damaging shoots and fruits. Effective control involves an integrated approach combining several strategies to reduce pest populations and protect the crop.

Understanding the Pest

The fruit borer moth lays eggs on brinjal leaves, shoots, and flower buds. The larvae, once hatched, bore into tender shoots, causing them to droop and wither (known as "dead hearts"), and later bore into developing fruits. Inside the fruit, they feed on the pulp, making the fruit unfit for consumption. The pest can be active throughout the crop cycle, especially during warmer months.

Cultural Control Methods

  • Crop Rotation: Avoid planting brinjal or other solanaceous crops (like tomato, potato) in the same field year after year. Rotate with non-host crops to break the pest cycle.

  • Field Sanitation: Regularly remove and destroy all infested shoots and fruits. Collect fallen fruits and burn or bury them deep to kill larvae and pupae.

  • Timely Planting: Adjust planting time to avoid peak pest activity periods if possible, though this can vary by region.

  • Nutrient Management: Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, which can lead to lush, tender growth that is more attractive to borers. Maintain balanced nutrition for stronger plants.

Mechanical and Biological Control

  • Hand Picking: Regularly inspect plants and hand-pick and destroy larvae, pupae, and eggs. This is effective for small infestations and in early stages.

  • Pheromone Traps: Install pheromone traps at a rate of 5 traps per acre to monitor moth activity and mass trap male moths, reducing their population. Change lures every 2-3 weeks.

  • Trichogramma Parasitoids: Release Trichogramma chilonis egg parasitoids at a rate of 50,000 per acre, 4-5 times at weekly intervals, starting from 30 days after transplanting. These tiny wasps lay their eggs inside the borer eggs, preventing them from hatching.

  • Neem-based Pesticides: Spray neem oil (Azadirachtin 1500 ppm or 3000 ppm) at 5 ml per liter of water. Neem acts as a repellent, antifeedant, and growth disruptor, especially effective against young larvae.

Chemical Control Measures

Chemical control should be used judiciously and as a last resort, especially when pest incidence is high. Always follow recommended dosages and safety precautions. Spraying should target young larvae before they bore into shoots or fruits.

Rotate insecticides with different modes of action to prevent the development of resistance. Always observe the pre-harvest interval (PHI) mentioned on the pesticide label to ensure fruits are safe for consumption.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Strategy

The most sustainable and effective way to manage brinjal fruit borer is through an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This involves combining all suitable methods – cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical – in a way that minimizes economic, health, and environmental risks. Regular monitoring of your crop for pest signs is crucial to decide when and which control measure to apply.

By consistently applying these integrated control measures, farmers can significantly reduce brinjal fruit borer damage, leading to healthier plants and better yields. Focus on prevention and early intervention to keep this pest under control.
