  • Nutrient Deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients like Boron, Calcium, Potassium, or an imbalance of Nitrogen.

  • Water Stress: Both insufficient watering (drought) and excessive watering (waterlogging) can cause fruit drop.

  • Temperature Extremes: Very high or very low temperatures, especially during flowering and fruit set.

  • Pest and Disease Attack: Pests like thrips, mites, and aphids, or diseases like powdery mildew and anthracnose, weaken the plant.

  • Poor Pollination: Lack of pollinators or adverse weather affecting pollen viability.

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Natural plant hormones can sometimes lead to shedding of excess fruits.

Balanced Nutrition for Stronger Plants

Proper nutrient management is vital. Ensure your chilli plants receive a balanced diet, especially focusing on micronutrients like Boron and Calcium, which are critical for fruit development and preventing shedding.

  • Boron: Essential for pollen germination and fruit set. A deficiency can lead to significant fruit drop. Apply Borax (sodium borate) as a foliar spray at 0.1-0.2% concentration (1-2 grams per litre of water) during flowering.

  • Calcium: Important for cell wall strength and fruit integrity. Calcium deficiency can cause blossom end rot and fruit drop. Apply calcium nitrate or calcium chloride as a foliar spray at 0.5% concentration.

  • Potassium: Helps in fruit development and stress tolerance. Ensure adequate potassium levels through balanced NPK fertilizers.

  • Nitrogen: While essential for vegetative growth, excessive nitrogen can lead to lush foliage at the expense of fruit set, sometimes causing flowers and young fruits to drop. Maintain a balanced NPK ratio.
