The dropping of flowers in bottle gourd (Lauki) is a common concern for farmers, often leading to reduced fruit set and lower yields. While some flower drop is natural, especially for male flowers, excessive dropping of female flowers indicates an underlying problem that needs attention. Understanding Bottle Gourd Flowers

Bottle gourd plants produce two types of flowers: male and female. Male flowers appear first and are more numerous. They have a slender stalk and pollen-bearing anthers. Female flowers have a small, swollen structure at their base, which is the immature fruit (ovary). Only female flowers develop into fruits after successful pollination. It's normal for many male flowers to drop after releasing pollen, as their purpose is served. However, if female flowers are dropping before or after pollination, it's a sign of stress.

Common Causes of Flower Drop

Several factors can contribute to bottle gourd flower drop:

  • Environmental Stress:

    • Temperature Fluctuations: Extreme heat (above 35°C) or sudden cold spells can stress the plant, causing flowers to drop.

    • Water Stress: Both overwatering (leading to root rot and nutrient lockout) and underwatering (causing wilting and nutrient deficiency) can lead to flower drop. Consistent moisture is crucial.

    • Humidity: Very low humidity can dry out pollen, affecting pollination.

  • Nutrient Imbalance:

    • Boron Deficiency: Boron is vital for pollen viability and fruit set. A lack of it can cause flowers to drop.

    • Calcium Deficiency: Essential for cell wall development and overall plant structure, calcium deficiency can weaken flowers.

    • Phosphorus Deficiency: Important for flowering and fruiting, low phosphorus can hinder flower development.

    • Excess Nitrogen: Too much nitrogen promotes lush leafy growth at the expense of flowering and fruiting, leading to flower drop.

  • Poor Pollination:

    • Lack of Pollinators: If bees or other insects are scarce, female flowers may not be pollinated and will drop.

    • Male-Female Flower Ratio: Sometimes, there might be an imbalance, with too few male flowers available to pollinate the female ones.

    • Pollen Viability: High temperatures or humidity can affect pollen quality.

  • Pests and Diseases:

    • Aphids and Mites: These sap-sucking pests weaken the plant, leading to flower drop.

    • Fruit Flies: Can lay eggs in developing ovaries, causing them to abort and drop.

    • Fungal Diseases: Powdery mildew or downy mildew can stress the plant, indirectly causing flower drop.

Preventing Flower Drop: Best Practices

Implementing good agricultural practices can significantly reduce flower drop:

  1. Consistent Watering: Provide regular and adequate water, especially during flowering and fruit development. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply in the morning.

  2. Balanced Nutrition:

    Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted farmyard manure. During flowering, ensure balanced NPK fertilization. Consider foliar sprays of micronutrients like boron (e.g., 0.2% borax solution) if deficiency is suspected. Avoid excessive nitrogen application.

    • Avoid spraying pesticides during peak pollinator activity (morning hours).

    • If natural pollination is insufficient, consider hand pollination. Gently transfer pollen from male flowers to female flowers using a soft brush in the early morning.

  5. Temperature Management: In extremely hot weather, provide partial shade to the plants during the hottest part of the day, if feasible.

When to Worry and What to Do

It's normal for some male flowers to drop. However, if you observe a significant number of female flowers dropping, especially those with a small fruit already formed at the base, it's time to investigate. Check your watering schedule, soil nutrient levels, and look for signs of pests or diseases. Adjust your practices based on the identified cause. For nutrient deficiencies, foliar sprays can provide a quick boost. For severe pest infestations, targeted treatment is necessary.

By understanding the reasons behind flower drop and taking proactive steps, farmers can significantly improve the fruit set and overall yield of their bottle gourd crop. Consistent care, balanced nutrition, and good pest management are key to a successful harvest.
