Sucking Pests in Cotton: Identification and Management

Sucking pests are a serious challenge for cotton farmers in India, leading to stunted growth, reduced boll formation, and lower yields if not managed effectively. These tiny insects feed by piercing plant tissues and sucking out the sap, weakening the plant and sometimes transmitting viral diseases. Understanding the common types of sucking pests, their damage symptoms, and timely management strategies is key to protecting your cotton crop.

Common Sucking Pests and Their Symptoms

Several sucking pests commonly infest cotton. Knowing how to identify them and the damage they cause helps in quick action.

  • Aphids (Aphis gossypii): Small, soft-bodied insects, usually green or black, found in colonies on the underside of leaves and tender shoots. They excrete honeydew, leading to sooty mould development, which hinders photosynthesis. Leaves may curl downwards.
  • Jassids (Leafhoppers, Amrasca biguttula biguttula): Wedge-shaped, greenish-yellow insects that hop or fly quickly when disturbed. They feed on the underside of leaves, causing 'hopper burn' – yellowing of leaf margins that eventually turn reddish-brown and curl downwards.
  • Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci): Tiny, white, moth-like insects found on the underside of leaves. They also excrete honeydew, leading to sooty mould. Severe infestation causes yellowing, premature defoliation, and reduces lint quality. They are also vectors for Cotton Leaf Curl Virus.
  • Thrips (Thrips tabaci): Very small, slender insects, often found in the folds of young leaves. They scrape the leaf surface and suck the oozing sap, causing silvery streaks on leaves, upward curling, and crinkling. Young plants are particularly vulnerable.
  • Mealybugs (Phenacoccus solenopsis): Soft-bodied, oval insects covered with a white, waxy, powdery coating. They cluster on stems, leaves, and bolls, sucking sap and excreting honeydew, leading to sooty mould and stunted growth.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Strategies

An integrated approach combines various methods for sustainable pest control, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.

  • Cultural Practices:
    • Use resistant or tolerant cotton varieties.
    • Maintain proper plant spacing to ensure good air circulation.
    • Remove weeds regularly, as they can host pests.
    • Practice crop rotation to break pest cycles.
    • Timely sowing and balanced fertilizer application (avoid excessive nitrogen which can attract pests).
  • Biological Control:
    • Conserve natural enemies like ladybird beetles, lacewings, and predatory mites, which feed on sucking pests.
    • Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides that harm beneficial insects.
    • Release commercially available biocontrol agents if feasible.
  • Mechanical Methods:
    • Install yellow sticky traps (10-12 traps per acre) to monitor and trap whiteflies and jassids.
    • Hand-picking mealybug-infested plant parts in early stages.

Monitoring and Early Detection

Regular scouting is critical to detect pest infestations early, before they cause significant damage.

  1. Weekly Field Surveys: Walk through your cotton field at least once a week, inspecting plants randomly.
  2. Examine Undersides of Leaves: Most sucking pests hide on the lower surface of leaves.
  3. Check Tender Shoots and Bolls: Aphids and mealybugs often infest these parts.
  4. Look for Symptoms: Yellowing, curling, silvery streaks, honeydew, or sooty mould are clear indicators.
  5. Use Yellow Sticky Traps: Place them strategically to catch adult whiteflies and jassids, giving an idea of pest pressure.
  6. Action Thresholds: Learn the economic threshold for each pest (e.g., 5-10 aphids per leaf, 2-3 whiteflies per leaf) to decide when to intervene.

Chemical Control Options

When pest populations exceed economic thresholds and other methods are insufficient, judicious use of insecticides may be necessary. Always rotate insecticides with different modes of action to prevent resistance development.
