Identifying Wilt Symptoms

  • Initial symptom: yellowing of lower leaves.
  • Drooping or wilting of leaves, often starting on one side of the plant or a single branch.
  • Stunted growth.
  • Eventually, the entire plant collapses and dies, often appearing as if it's suffering from severe water stress, even when soil moisture is adequate.
  • If you split the stem near the base, you might see discolouration (brownish streaks) in the vascular tissue, which are the water-conducting channels.

Understanding the Causes and Favorable Conditions

Wilt in moong is primarily caused by soil-borne fungal pathogens like Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vignae and Macrophomina phaseolina (which also causes charcoal rot). These fungi survive in the soil and crop debris for many years.

Favorable conditions for wilt:
  • High soil temperatures (25-35°C).
  • Periods of drought stress followed by irrigation or rainfall.
  • Poorly drained soils or waterlogging, which stresses the roots.
  • Soil injury from nematodes or insects, creating entry points for fungi.
  • Low soil organic matter.
  • Continuous cultivation of moong or other susceptible crops in the same field.

Effective Prevention and Cultural Practices

  • Resistant Varieties: Choose moong varieties known to be resistant or tolerant to wilt. Consult your local agricultural extension office for recommendations specific to your region.
  • Seed Treatment: Treat seeds with fungicides (e.g., Carbendazim + Thiram) or bio-agents (e.g., Trichoderma viride) before sowing. This protects seedlings from early infection.
  • Crop Rotation: Practice a 2-3 year crop rotation with non-host crops like cereals (rice, maize, sorghum) to break the disease cycle. Avoid planting moong or other susceptible legumes continuously.
  • Soil Health: Improve soil drainage by proper land preparation. Incorporate organic matter (farmyard manure, compost) to enhance soil health and microbial activity, which can suppress pathogens.
  • Balanced Nutrition: Ensure balanced fertilizer application. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can make plants more susceptible.
  • Water Management: Avoid both water stress and waterlogging. Provide adequate, timely irrigation.
  • Field Sanitation: Remove and destroy infected plant debris after harvest to reduce pathogen inoculum in the soil.

Chemical and Biological Control Measures

If wilt appears in patches, drenching the soil around affected plants with a systemic fungicide can help. Soil application of bio-control agents can also be effective.
