Under the aegis of Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) of AICRP on Goat improvement, ICAR-IVRI, Mukteswar campus organized 7 days training program on “Scientific Rearing and Management of Goats” from 14.03.2024 to 20.03.2024. A total of 30 livestock owners and farmers from Sunkhari Kala Village, Sitarganj Block, U.S. Nagar district have participated in the training. The inaugural function of the training was held on 14.03.2024. Dr. Bimalendu Mondal, Joint Director, ICAR-IVRI, Mukteswar campus acted as chief guest and urged the trainee farmers to adopt goat husbandry.
Inaugural Function of the Training
The training schedule comprised of theoretical and practical demonstrations, farm and field visits. Topics which were covered under training program include; Management and feeding of goats, kids management, selection of goats, viral diseases of goats (PPR, Goat pox, FMD, Blue Tongue disease etc.), parasitic diseases of goats, vector borne diseases, housing management of goats, reproductive management of goats, stress management in goats, metabolic diseases in goats, fodder production for goats, agro-forestry models for goat production, importance of silage, ethnoveterinary practices etc.
Theoretical lectures
Farmers were also given the practical demonstrations in terms of; measurement of body temperature, silage preparation, fecal sample testing, application of parasitical drugs, estrus detection, pregnancy diagnosis. Visit to Experimental Goat Farm, Surmane, Experimental Cattle Herd, Laboratory Animal Production Section (LAPS), Herbal garden, Museum, Library, Cold-room was also facilitated.
Practical Demonstrations
At the end of the training, feedback was taken from the trainee farmers and it was highly to note that, they would like to adopt scientific goat husbandry practices. They mentioned the training was highly useful and also encourage other farmers to attend these types of training.
The valedictory function was held on 20.03.2024. All the trainees were distributed participation certificates. Dr. Sher Singh, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IVRI, Mukteswar campus acted as chief guest and highlighted the importance of goat meat considering its huge demand in the market. All the scientists from ICAR-IVRI, Mukteswar campus were actively involved in the training and delivered the lectures and imparted the scientific knowledge among the trainee farmers. The whole 7 day training was coordinated by Dr. Madhusoodan A.P., and co-ordinated by Dr. Indrasen Chauhan, Dr. Gurav Amol Ramdas, Dr. Amir Kumar Samal, Dr. Nitish Singh Kharayat, Dr. Nidhi Sharma, Dr. Ashutosh Fular, Scientist(s), TAH Division, ICAR-IVRI, Mukteswar campus. The training was ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Gurav Amol Ramdas.
