ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research in collaboration with ARS, Anantapuramu, ANGRAU has organized a “Castor Seed Mela & Farmers-Scientists Interaction” at Rekulakunta, Anantapuramu, Andhra Pradesh on 30.05.2024. Scientists from ICAR-IIOR, ANGRAU, KVK, FPOs and around 120 farmers participated in the event.

Dr. R.K. Mathur, Director, ICAR-IIOR on his opening remarks highlighted the importance of access to quality seed of oilseeds at right time to farmers. He explained the potential of the state in castor area expansion and assured the participating farmers, agricultural department officers and scientists that ICAR-IIOR will help in deploying the seed of newly released castor hybrids ICH66 and ICH-5 for Anantapuramu farmers. Speaking on the occasion Smt. Uma Maheshwari, Joint Director of Agriculture, Anantapuramu informed the participants that farmers are gradually shifting to castor crop in the district due to high cost of cultivation of groundnut.

Farmers from various mandals of Anantapuramu participated and expressed their happiness for availability of quality seed before the start of the season. They have actively interacted with the scientists of ICAR-IIOR and ANGRAU. The farmers were appraised of the good management practices of castor, role of FPOs in increasing the yield of the crops and their income level and the timely advisories through WhatsApp groups.
