The PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sangrur, under the aegis of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and ICAR-ATARI, Zone I, Ludhiana, organized a five-day vocational training course on “Beekeeping – A Lucrative Subsidiary Occupation” from September 16-20. A total of 43 farmers and farm women from Barnala, Patiala and Sangrur districts participated in the course.
During the inaugural session, Dr Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Training), KVK, Sangrur extended a warm welcome to the participants and shared the importance and economics of beekeeping as a subsidiary occupation in agriculture. He also briefed them about various other vocational training courses and outreach activities being performed by this Kendra and persuaded them to adopt subsidiary occupations in order to generate additional income and employment for their families.
Dr Gurbir Kaur, Assistant Professor (Plant Pathology) and Course Coordinator, acquainted the trainees with the uses of various beekeeping equipment. She deliberated on nutritional and medicinal uses of honey, different types of honey bees and technical rearing of Italian bees throughout the year. She also demonstrated proper care and management of Apis-mellifera during the autumn, winter, summer and spring seasons. Besides, she focused on the by-products of beekeeping like propolis, wax, royal jelly, pollen etc. She further explained the symptoms of various diseases and insect-pests in honey bees and its management.
Dr Nirwant Singh, Deputy Director (Horticulture), Sangrur shared the information regarding subsidy and financial assistance schemes of National Bee Board and State Horticulture Department.
Sardar Jagdish Kalra, Ex Manager, SBI, Sangrur also acquainted the participants with various banking schemes.
