To curb the menace of stubble burning, the Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized ‘Training of Trainers on Paddy Straw Management to Control Straw Burning’ under Crop Residue Management (CRM) scheme. In total, 35 agriculture and agriculture development officers as well as AAEs from the State Department of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, and scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendras from the districts of Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Barnala, Bathinda, Fazilka, and Sri Muktsar Sahib attended the training programme.

In his welcome address, Dr Mahesh Kumar Narang, Head of the department and Course Director, spoke on the training mandate and motivated the trainees to create awareness among the fellow farmers regarding paddy residue management. He said that the department would organize four such trainings under CRM scheme during the current season for the state government functionaries.

Dr Aseem Verma, Training Coordinator, informed that the trainees were imparted knowledge about various in-situ- and ex-situ straw management technologies such as Happy Seeder, Smart Seeder, Super Seeder, Straw chopper-cum-spreader, Incorporation, Surface Seeder, Baling, etc. Trainees were also imparted weed and pest management knowledge in residue-managed fields, he informed.

Dr HS Sidhu, Principal Scientist; Dr Manpreet Singh, Senior Scientist; Dr Jasvir Singh Gill, Agronomist; Dr Aseem Verma, Scientist; Dr Apoorv Prakash, Scientist; Dr Simarjeet Kaur, Principal Agronomist and Dr Beant Singh, Principal Entomologist, were the experts during the training programme.

All the participants showed keen interest in the training and interactive sessions on field problems. Trainees were also given hands-on experience with different machines during the programme.

Later, Dr Verma proposed a vote of thanks.
