The Eastern Regional Station of ICAR-IVRI, Kolkata organized a one-day Training Program on “Poultry and Goat vaccination” on 3rd January, 2025 at Dighari village of Bongaon block in West Bengal. The objective of the program was Capacity Building of the scheduled caste beneficiaries under Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC) Scheme. Beneficiaries were rural women (n=20) belonging to Dighari, Kaikhali, Mathurapur, Nischintopur and Satashi villages of Dighari Gram Panchayat of Bongaon Block, North 24 Paraganas. All of them are engaged in animal husbandry practices and back yard poultry farming at home, received previously live poultry seed (Kaveri and or RIR chicks) and underwent “Goat Promotional Program” from ERS, ICARIVRI under Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC) Scheme. One-day program was consisted of both theory lectures as well as practical hands of training at the village level with a concept of “Learn at Home”. Dr. B. Mondal, Principal Scientist, Dr. S. Naskar, Principal Scientist and Dr. G. K. Das, Principal Scientist from ERS, ICAR-IVRI was present in the program. Dr. B. Mondal and Dr. S. Naskar were the technical experts and resource persons for the training and Dr. G. K. Das co-ordinated the events. In the beginning of the program, all the beneficiaries received two kits, one is awareness kit for knowledge development consisting leaflets and handbills on poultry and goats diseases for which vaccinations are done routinely.

The second kit consisted of masks (n=5), gloves (n=5), syringes (1 ml, 2 ml, 5 ml and 10 ml), slip pad, sanitizer (2 x 100 ml) and small sample container with cotton swab. Dr. G. K. Das highlighted the need of Skill Development Program for rural women in general and weaker section of the society in particular. He also pointed out the purpose of skill development as one of the major objectives of DAPSC Scheme. At the beginning of the program, Dr. B. Mondal told about the importance of vaccination in general including human and poultry as well as goats in particular. He explained about various types of vaccinations in poultry, turkey, ducks and goats, various routes of administration and necessary precautions to be taken during vaccination procedure. Dr S. Naskar in his lecture emphasized the need of skill development for rural women. The lectures were followed by a live demonstration of the process of vaccination through subcutaneous, intra-muscular routes, nasal, eye and oral drops etc. in poultry and intramuscular routes in goats. All the participants did the practice in their own hands after demonstration.

Input Distribution Program: All the twenty beneficiaries received steel and aluminum utensils one each, essential for their routine operation (poultry food preparation) of poultry farming.
