A farmer awareness camp was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Punjab Agricultural University, Sangrur under the guidelines of Director Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and ICAR-Attari Zone-1 under Stubble Management Project 2024-25 at village Kamalpur of Block Sunam on proper management of paddy stubble and cultivation of rabi crops. In which more than 70 farmers participated.
On this occasion, Dr. Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Training) of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, made the farmers aware about the ill effects of burning stubble. He said that burning one ton of stubble causes loss of 400 kg of organic carbon, 5.5 kg of nitrogen, 2.3 kg of phosphorus, 25 kg of potash and 1.2 kg of sulfur. Burning of paddy stubble produces toxic gases which pollute the environment and also have adverse effects on the health of humans and animals. He gave detailed information to the farmers about the techniques of managing stubble in the field as per the recommendations of PAU. He said that by continuously ploughing stubble in the field for many years, the use of chemical fertilizers is reduced. Which also reduces the cost of farming. He also told about the provision of stubble management agricultural machinery by KVK.
Dr. Mandeep Singh also informed the farmers about the advanced varieties of wheat certified by PAU and the biofertilizer inoculation of wheat seeds and also shed light on the arrangements made by KVK for the seeds of Rabi crops.
Dr. Rukinder Preet Singh Dhaliwal, Assistant Professor (Crop Science) gave information to the farmers about the management of stubble in the field in various ways and weed and fertilizer management in the sown wheat. He also told the farmers about the selection of nozzle for spraying herbicides and the correct spraying method. He also motivated the farmers to sow mustard and gram for home use along with wheat and also gave information about the cultivation of these crops. Progressive farmers S. Harpreet Singh Kaleke and Malkit Singh shared their experiences on stubble management and surface seeder technique. Village Sarpanch S. Gurlal Singh Gaavi Zaildar appealed to the farmers present not to burn stubble so that the environment of the village can be kept clean. He also thanked the team of experts who arrived from KVK. Finally, the farmers were provided with agricultural literature published by PAU regarding Rabi crops and stubble management and KVK thanked the village farmers for reaching this program. Village Sarpanch S. Harbans Singh Happy and member Chamkaur Singh shared their views on stubble management and thanked the team of experts who came from Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Prominent farmers of the village Kulwinder Numberdar, Raj Singh, Malkit Singh, Jatinder Singh, Gurkamal Singh, Mithu Singh Iqbal Singh and the entire Nagar Panchayat of Kamalpur were specially present during the camp.
