On October 17, 2024, KVK Adilabad celebrated World Food Day with 50 tribal women farmers from the Prajamitha Cooperative Society in Utnoor. The event, themed “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” emphasized the importance of food security for community well-being. Dr. G. Srinivas, Associate Director of Research at PJTAU, Jagtial, was the chief guest. He highlighted the right to accessible, nutritious, and sustainable food, advocating for locally grown foods to enhance nutrition and well-being in tribal communities through dietary diversification. Dr. Y. Praveen Kumar, Programme Coordinator, provided an overview of the Tribal Sub Plan activities conducted over the past decade. His insights highlighted the significant progress made in improving the nutritional status and livelihoods of deprived tribes in the district. The initiatives have not only focused on food security but also on empowering women and enhancing community resilience. Dr. A. Poshadri, SMS (Home Science), led a hands-on training session. Participants learned to prepare soybean-based foods, including soymilk, paneer, and soy-based spice powders, emphasizing the importance of soybean value addition. This training aims to promote better nourishment and provide supplemental income opportunities for tribal women farmers. Additionally, Dr. Poshadri showcased various food products made from locally grown food crops, underscoring the potential for improved nutrition through local resources. The event also featured contributions from several other specialists, including Dr. K. Rajashekar (SMS, Plant Protection), Dr. D. Mohan Das (SMS, Crop Production), Dr. M. Sunil Kumar (SMS, Horticulture), and Dr. G. Shivacharan (SMS, Extension). They shared insights on building sustainable food systems within the district, addressing the pressing need for community-driven agricultural practices that prioritize sustainability and nutrition. The celebration of World Food Day at KVK Adilabad was not just a recognition of food security issues but a proactive step towards empowering tribal women, fostering community resilience, and promoting health through local food systems. The collaborative efforts of these experts and the active participation of the tribal women farmers herald a promising future for sustainable development in the region.
