The PAU-Farmer Advisory Service Centre, Amritsar organized a farmer- scientist interaction at village Khiala Kalan of district Amritsar.

Dr Bikranjit Singh, Associate Director, KVK, Amritsar encouraged the farmers to adopt recommended technologies and stressed the need for joint efforts from all the stakeholders for sustainable farming. The scientists of FASC and KVK, Amritsar as well as extension officers of the Department of Agricultural and Farmers’ Welfare, Punjab discussed the necessary steps required for paddy stubble management without burning in the fields. Farmers were motivated to use the technologies like PAU Smart Seeder, Surface Seeder, etc.

Dr Rajan Bhatt, Soil Scientist, discussed the soil fertility and nutrients management with the farmers.

Dr Gurmeet Singh, entomology specialist, motivated the farmers to adopt eco-friendly technologies and integrated pest management. He also advised the farmers to stop spraying pesticides 25 days before harvesting of basmati crop to avoid the harmful residues or as per experts’ guidance.

Dr Kanwarpal Singh upgraded the knowledge of the farmers regarding use of paddy straw for dairy animals and formulation of balanced feed for dairy animals.

Dr Narinderpal Singh, District Extension Specialist (Senior Most), discussed and encouraged the farmers to enhance farm and non-farm income with the help of additional economic activities and record keeping for better livelihood.

Dr Baljinder Singh Sandhu, Agricultural Officer of the State Department of Agricultural and Farmers’ Welfare, shared various measures for field residue burning free environment in the district and presented the concluding remarks. It was realized that there was a need to switch over to the basmati production completely in Amritsar district for the establishment of quality basmati market in the district. Local farmers also suggested to upgrade Khiala market yard for basmati marketing.
