Farm Advisory Service Center of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Sangrur, organized conservation awareness camp in Longowwal village, focusing on the moderate use of water and not setting fire to the paddy stubble. More than 50 progressive farmers of the village participated in the camp. Presiding over the camp Dr. Ashok Kumar, District Extension Scientist (Soil Science) insisted on re-irrigating the paddy only two days after waterlogging. To reduce blight in paddy, spraying of 1.5% potassium nitrate (3 kg potassium nitrate in 200 liters of water per acre) is suggested when paddy is in the cabbage. He talked about new recommendations for the management of paddy and basmati pests and diseases like cabbage borer, sheath blight and blast. -Wheat sowing with cum-mulching method explained in detail. He spoke about the benefits of organic inoculation consortium to apply the organic inoculation to the next crop of wheat to improve the biological health of the soil. He encouraged the farmers to check the soil of their fields after harvesting the kharif crop and get the soil tested. Detailed information about sampling method was also shared. He further shared ideas about sound food management in major crops of rubber. Dr. Amandeep Kaur, District Extension Specialist (Crop Science), Farm Advisory Service Centre, Barnala gave detailed information to the farmers about the new recommended varieties of wheat to be planted in rabi. He also shed light on the recommendations of new weed killers for the control of wheat weeds, especially Gulli Dande. On this occasion, an exhibition and sale of PAU literature, metal scrap, bypass fat, animal milk and water testing kit for human consumption was organized. Many questions raised during the camp, including nano-urea, how to do soil and water sampling, fertilizer management in organic farming, control of wheat weeds, etc. were effectively answered. Emphasizing the importance of home garden, he highlighted the winter vegetable kits prepared by Punjab Agricultural University and made available for sale. On this occasion Nirmal Singh, Mr. Jaswinder Singh, Mr. Bahadur Singh helped set up the camp.
