Amid a delicate blend of myriad hues and sweet fragrance, a two-day “Dr MS Randhawa Annual Flower Show and Competition” concluded at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The show, organised by the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping in association with the Estate Organization, presented an eternal beauty of the nature as well as the floral diversity at its best. It was a pleasant feast to the eyes of the beholders, who were fascinated by the newly evolved tulip flowers and the countless varieties of petunia, pansy, cineraria, calendula, marigold, dahlia, etc. and other green plants.
Calling the development of Tulip garden by the PAU as a huge stride in floriculture and the first-of-its-kind in Punjab, the chief guest Dr RIS Gill, Estate Officer, stated: “Diversification in floriculture and landscaping has manifested prosperous life for the farmers, nurseries and the flower lovers.” Further, while paying floral tributes to the former PAU Vice-Chancellor and an art enthusiast Dr Randhawa, the senior official Dr Gill observed, “An impeccable administration of Dr Randhawa coupled with a strong penchant for ornamentation rendered a new lease of life to PAU via the development of multitude flower varieties, green nurseries, lush green lawns, grassy playgrounds, etc. during the erstwhile years.” He hailed the efforts of the Department of Floriculture and Landscaping for putting up an excellent and colourful show for the visitors, and gave away the certificates to the winners.
Informing that exotic flowers were the one of priority areas for floral diversification, Dr Parminder Singh, Head, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, said, “The Vice-Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal’s extraordinary initiative, and the floriculture experts’ passionate work have been instrumental in the establishment of the nouveau Tulip garden at PAU.” Flower enthusiasts; nurseries; amateurs; and private, government and semi-government institutions; participated whole-heartedly in nine different classes competition, he added.
The city-based schools comprising BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar; and Police DAV Public School; college, namely Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town; and few individuals clinched the maximum prizes for the arrangement of fresh and dry flowers; fresh-cum-dry flowers; and flower ornamentals (button holes, flower bouquet, garlands, bracelet, ear rings and hair rings).
In the categories of cut flowers, plant as gift, bonsai, cacti and succulents, foliage and perennial flowering plants in pots, flower grown in pots, and pot arrangement; BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar; BCM Arya School, Lalton; Sat Paul Mittal School; DAV Public School, BRS Nagar; Police DAV Public School; DAV School, Sarabha Nagar; Doraha Public School; Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town; GHG Har Parkash College of Education for Women, Sidhwan Khurd; Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib; Verka Milk Plant, Ludhiana; New Janta Nursery, Malerkotla; Sports Authority of India, Guru Nanak Stadium; AIPL Dream City; and city residents bagged the first and the second prizes.
