The Zoological Society, Department of Zoology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated the Wildlife week by organizing a guest lecture on the “Geospatial Technologies and its relevance for Resilient India” in the University (PAU). Dr Anil Sood, Former Head, Agro-ecosystem and Crop Modelling Division, Punjab Remote Sensing Centre, Ludhiana, delivered the talk. Dr Shammi Kapoor, Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, PAU, was the chief guest. The programme was held under the guidance of Dr Tejdeep Kaur Kler, Principal Ornithologist and Head, Patron of Zoological Society.
During his talk, Dr Sood shed light on remote sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information System (GIS). He also elaborated the applications of geospatial technologies in mapping land use cover, crop damage and crop residue burning etc.; use of remote sensing in crop condition monitoring; use of drones, machine learning, Artificial Intelligence and robotics in agriculture. Besides, he explained the uses of geospatial technologies in monitoring wildlife population, ecology, behavior, management and conservation.
Lauding the informative talk by the key speaker, Dr Kapoor urged the students, working on wildlife, to take the help of these technologies to get better results.
Dr Kler underscored the importance of remote sensing in monitoring wildlife in difficult terrains.
Dr BK Babbar, Senior Zoologist (Rodents) and President Zoological Society, highlighted the meritorious accomplishments of the guest speaker.
Dr Rajwinder Singh, Zoologist and Secretary (Finance), welcomed the dignitaries, guest speaker, faculty and students. Later, he proposed a vote of thanks.
