Kakdwip Research Centre (KRC) of ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) organized an interaction meet cum Swachhata Hi Sewa programme for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe farmers of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal on 2nd October, 2023 to commemorate the Gandhi jayanthi diwas. At the beginning of the programme Dr. Debasis De, Head, KRC of ICAR-CIBA, Kakdwip, addressed the gathering and elaborated the importance of organizing Swachhata Hi Sewa programme.

Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal. Director, ICAR-CIBA addressed the gathering and put forth the importance of restricting the use of single use plastics. Dr. M Kailasam, Head, Fish Culture Division, ICAR-CIBA also addressed the farmers and thanked them for participating in this programme. On this occasion a keynote address and presentation on the topic “Shun Single use Plastics” was also delivered by Dr. Sankar Prasad Paik, Associate Professor, Sundarban Mahavidyalay, University of Calcutta, Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas.

In his speech, he stressed upon the importance of recycling of the plastic materials and citizen movement for restricting the use of disposable plastic products. It was followed by an interaction with the SC and ST farmers on use of Single use Plastics. Stainless steel water bottles were distributed to the participant farmers for making awareness on reducing the use of plastic bottles. Further a special cleaning drive involving the staff of KRC and invited farmers were organized inside the campus. Around 60 farmers belong to SC and ST communities participated in the programme.
