National Seminar On Role of Tribal Women in Nation Building after 75 Years of Independence 4 th – 5 thAugust, 2023
As our Nation celebrates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on the completion of 75 years of Independence, we commemorate and celebrate the contribution of all its peoples in various spheres. It is in this context that we need to discuss and highlight the role of tribal people, especially the Tribal Women in Nation Building. India is unique in the sense that it has in more than 700 tribal communities. These communities have enriched and continue to contribute to the country’s social and cultural fabric. Women in tribal societies have played a leading role in the promotion, protection and conservation of the environment through their traditional practices. With their vast repository of traditional knowledge, they have been the torch-bearers of sustainable development. They have also enriched the nation with a glorious legacy of arts and crafts and stellar performance in sports. While the Tribal Culture is associated with healthy gender relations and greater autonomy that women hold in social spheres, women’s role and contribution in Nation Building is yet to be recognized. Several tribal women like Rani Durgavati, Singi Dai, Phulo and Jhano Murmu, Leepa and Queen Ropuiliani played an important role in the freedom struggle of India. Even after Independence various Tribal Women like Jamuna Tudu, Kuni Sikaka, Needonu Angami, Soni Sori, Dayamani Barla and Hon’ble President Draupadi Murmu have played a significant role in the development of the society. Tribal people have been instrumental in the development of the nation. They have fought for prestige, pride and transformation of our society. Various initiatives under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav seek to commemorate and provide a platform to discuss this contribution. On 15th November 2021 Janjatiya Gaurav Divas was celebrated on the birth anniversary of one of the greatest freedom fighters Birsa Munda to remember the contribution of Adivasi icons in Nation-Building. On the occasion of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of 50 new Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) in 27 Districts of 7 States and 1 UT. Department of Sociology, Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Banaras Hindu University Varanasi plans to organize a National Seminar on the “Role of Tribal Women in Nation Building after 75 Years of Independence” on 4th-5 th August 2023. This two Day National Seminar is an attempt to celebrate the Tribal Women in Indian history and also to discuss various aspects that impact their lives.
