ICAR-Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture (CIBA) celebrated the World Intellectual Property Day, on 26th April 2023 with the theme “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity” celebrating the “can do” attitude of women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs around the world and their ground-breaking work. Even though an increased number of women entering the science, technology, engineering, and allied fields in recent years, there exists a wide gap between their numbers their representation in the intellectual property (IP) system. Therefore, this program is organized in order to motivate women inventors, creators, and entrepreneur researchers to develop an interest in the Intellectual Property system.
Dr. Kuldeep K. Lal, CIBA welcomed the Chief Guest and he pointed out the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), the importance of better identification, planning, commercialization, rendering, and thus preservation of inventions or creativity in the modern world.
Dr. V. Parimalavarsini, Assistant Controller of Patents & Designs, Patent Office, Chennai is the Guest speaker. She opined that the Government of India through the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Ministry of Science and Technology, has been actively engaged in creating an ecosystem and enabling environment for women in the Science and Technology (S&T) domain since 2002. In 2014, DST took a massive step forward and brought all the Women-centric schemes & programs under the ambit of KIRAN (Knowledge Involvement in Research Advancement through Nurturing). She covered distinct aspects of amendments in IP legislations, copyrights, designs, trademarks, guidance in IP filing, adopting efficient and paperless service, disseminating IP awareness to the public, filing of patents, types of application, related to state-wise, Institute-wise, and Research and Development Organization wise, advantages of patenting; Non-patentable subject matters, patentable inventions, provisional and complete specifications of patent applications, patent drafting, PCT applications, expedited examination of applications etc., Later, she interacted with the scientists and technical staff on IP related issues.
ITMU-ABI Unit of ICAR-CIBA coordinated the event and Dr. P.K. Patil, Principal Scientist, AAHED & Officer In-charge, ITMU-ABI Unit of CIBA proposed the welcome address and the meeting ended with a vote of thanks by him.
