The ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute organised a front-line demonstration programme showcasing improved potato varieties to empower local farmers and promote sustainable agricultural production and income generation among tribal farmers in seven villages of Leh district, Ladakh, in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Leh, Ladakh.

During the 2-day (30th September-1st October 2024) visit the officials interacted with the farmers and discussed about various challenges in potato cultivation. The team of scientists also provided practical solutions to the farmers.

It was observed that Kufri Himalini outperformed other varieties in the village, yielding approximately 34-36 t/ha, followed by Kufri Karan and Kufri Chandramukhi with yields of about 28-30 t/ha, and Kufri Jyoti at 23-25 t/ha. In contrast, the local variety produced only around 18 t/ha. The farmers expressed satisfaction with the yield of Kufri Himalini and lauded its shape and good storage life. On average, Kufri Himalini generated about twice the income compared to the local variety. The performance data for all demonstrated varieties has been shared with the District Agriculture Department for further dissemination and to develop Likir village as a collaborative potato seed village.
