PAU- Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Faridkot, conducted a five-day training programme on machinery for In-Situ Crop Residue Management under the project, ‘Promotion of Agricultural Technologies for In-Situ Crop Residue Management’ from September 2 to September 6, 2024. Twenty-five farmers from adopted villages in the district participated in the training, which focused on promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Dr. Kamaldeep Singh Matharu, Deputy Director (Training), KVK Faridkot, introduced the participants to the functions of KVK and provided detailed guidance on pest control measures using recommended chemicals in proper dosages. He also shared effective methods to control rodent population in wheat crop planted with surface seeder and other crop residue management (CRM) machines.
Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Professor of Agricultural Engineering, discussed various straw management combinations, including harvesting with combines fitted with SMS and sowing wheat with machines like Happy Seeder, Smart Seeder, and Surface Seeder. He also offered recommendations for vegetable planting post-paddy harvest and introduced the concepts of dry and wet mixing before wheat sowing.
Participants were also informed about the use of paddy straw in mushroom cultivation, straw mulching in orchards, and straw incorporation to improve soil health. Dr. Gurdarshan Singh, Professor of Horticulture, highlighted straw’s multiple uses in horticulture, while Dr. Pawitar Singh, Assistant Professor of Soil Science, emphasized its environmental and economic benefits.
The session concluded with Dr. Rakesh Kumar addressing participants’ queries, encouraging them to adopt sustainable residue management techniques, and motivating others to stop burning paddy straw.
