A three-day national agricultural seminar on “Climate Smart Disease Management for Sustainable Plant Health” was formally inaugurated today on 10th July 2024 in the main auditorium of Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, Bhagalpur under the joint aegis of Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Udaipur, Rajasthan. This three-day national seminar was inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Guest Dr. Jawahar Lal, Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University. During this ceremony, Dean Agriculture of the University Dr. AK Sah, Director Research Dr. AK Singh, Director Seed and Field Dr. Fiza Ahmed, Registrar Dr. Mizanul Haque and Dean Student Welfare and Organizing Secretary Dr. J Srivastava were present on the stage. After this, the lamp was lit and a glimpse of the activities of BAU, Sabour was shown through Safarnama.
The welcome address was given by Dr. J.N. Srivastava, Director Student Welfare and Convener cum Organizing Secretary of the conference. He shared the main objective of the conference and informed that the symposium has been divided into ten main themes in which different lectures and posters will be presented. Dr. Srivastava in his welcome address expressed concern about the changing climate which has led to the increase in pest and insect incidence and has also changed our ecosystem. In this scenario, the importance of climate smart disease management is very important and this conference will cater to the same and will be important for the scientists and farmer community. Dr. Faiza Ahmad, Director Seeds and Fields, BAU Sabour in his address mentioned the adverse effects of climate change and especially emphasized the hazards of pesticide residues in controlling the excessive pest and insect situation under changing climate. Dr. Mizanul Haque, Registrar, BAU Sabour in his address motivated the young scientists and expressed the importance of Sustainable Development Goals and ways to achieve them. He emphasized on sustainable agricultural systems to feed the growing global population and the use of innovative ideas along with traditional knowledge for this purpose.
Dr. A.K. Singh, Director Research BAU Sabour emphasized on interdisciplinary research approaches for sustainable agricultural system. He emphasized on holistic approach of various departments of the University for improving agricultural system. In the same sequence, Dr. A.K. Sah, Dean (Agriculture) BAU Sabour expected excellent discussions on climate smart pest management which will bring recommendations for climate smart disease management strategies. In the inaugural session, the conference souvenir and the book “Unwrapping the Value from Waste” written by Dr. Abhijit Ghatak were unveiled.
The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Jawahar Lal, Vice Chancellor, Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University. First of all, he thanked the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, Dr. D.R. Singh and congratulated him for the new activities and developments taking place in the university. He emphasized on collaborative initiatives between BAU and TMBU for skill development. He urged to do research targeting societal development. He emphasized on knowledge economy which is knowledge based development for the upliftment of the nation’s economy. He asked us to think about our next generations and adopt a sustainable system of growing crops for a better ecosystem and a better planet. Dr Lal called upon the organizing committee to submit the main points emerging from this seminar to the Bihar government for formulating a policy on it.
This seminar was attended by Dr Dinesh Singh, Principal Scientist and Head of Department, Plant Protection, IISR, Dr Rekha Balodi, Scientist ICAR NRCIPM and more than 170 scientists and students from various institutions from other parts of the country. In the end, the vote of thanks was presented by Dr Chanda Kushwaha. She welcomed and thanked all the delegates and key speakers. She thanked all the people directly and indirectly involved in organizing the conference. This seminar reflects the sensitivity and commitment of the university towards this important subject for managing the various challenges arising from the changing climate in the current context. In this seminar, ten topics will be discussed and presented keeping in view the various challenges and possibilities of “climate-friendly disease management”.
