The faculty members and students at the Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Prof. Satyendra Mohan Casshyap on March 20, 2025, in New Delhi.

Delivering the condolence message, Prof. Rashid Umar, Chairperson of the Department, remembered Prof. Casshyap as a passionate sedimentologist whose commitment to his field inspired generations of students and scholars. Born on February 17, 1936, Prof. Casshyap joined the University in 1958 as a Lecturer in the Applied Science Department and became a Professor in 1983. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Geology from 1987 to 1990 and as the Dean, Faculty of Science, from 1995 to 1996, retiring from university services in April 1996.

During his tenure, Prof. Casshyap played a pivotal role in advancing the Department of Geology, fostering academic excellence and innovation.

He was one of the founding members and a former president of the Indian Association of Sedimentologists. His outstanding contributions to sedimentology earned him a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1963.

The Department extended its deepest condolences to Prof. Casshyap’s family during this difficult time. His departure marks an irreplaceable void in the academic world and for all who had the honor of knowing him, said Prof Umar
