ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Aquaculture Division, Mumbai organized an awareness and skill development program on “Freshwater Prawn Breeding and Seed Production” during 15-19 March, 2023. The training program was attended by 12 participants (8 Male and 4 female) from Amboli, Andheri Suburb Mumbai, Maharashtra. The training programme aims to impart knowledge about the fresh water prawn breeding and seed production for the tribal farmers in different hamlets around Mumbai, Maharashtra. The programme began was inaugurated by Director, Dr. C. N, Ravishankar Joint Director, Dr. N.P. Sahu and Head of Division Dr. Sukham Munilkumar. Director and Joint Director welcomed the participants and encouraged them to undergo this training and assured the complete support from ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai for their development in future. Participants were briefed with the details of the programme by course co-ordinator Dr. Madhuri Pathak and Dr. Kapil Sukhdhane.
Six theory and ten practical classes encompassing various aspects of Freshwater Prawn Breeding and Seed Production viz. Present status of fresh water prawn aquaculture, Fresh water prawn biology, Water and soil quality management in fresh water prawn culture, Fresh water prawn life cycle, Essentials of fresh water prawn hatchery, Maturation and breeding, Larval Rearing, Nursery management of larvae. Major emphasis was given for the hands on demonstration of Brood stock identification, Water quality management, feed management- egg custard preparation and feeding. Tribal participants expressed their views as how they were benefitted by this training programme. The training programme was covered in local Newspaper “Loksatta”.
