In a grand ceremony commemorating India’s 78th Independence Day, Dr. Jasvir Singh Gill, Agronomist from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, was honoured with the prestigious Punjab Sarkar Parmaan Patra. The award, conferred by Punjab’s Chief Minister, S. Bhagwant Singh Maan, was presented during the State-Level Independence Day function at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, Jalandhar. This recognition highlights Dr. Gill’s exceptional contributions to agricultural innovation and natural resource conservation.
Currently serving in the All India Coordinated Research Project on Weed Management (AICRP-WM) within PAU’s Department of Agronomy, Dr. Gill’s research has led to the development of technologies and machines that address some of agriculture’s most pressing challenges. His work in natural resource conservation, crop residue management, and cost-effective weed control methods has not only gained national recognition but also underscored his commitment to sustainable farming practices.
Among Dr. Gill’s notable achievements is the design and development of several innovative agricultural machines, including the Lucky Seed Drill, PAU Surface Seeder, Cutter-cum-Spreader, and PAU Happy Seeder. These machines have been successfully commercialized, providing farmers with practical tools to enhance productivity while conserving resources. His work on the Tarr-Wattar Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technology and Surface Seeding of Wheat has reshaped farming techniques, offering viable solutions to mechanization challenges. His extensive research has resulted in 15 crucial recommendations that have significantly impacted the agricultural sector.
Dr. Gill has been recognized with numerous awards and honours, including the High Impact Innovation Award from the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, the Young Scientist Award from the Punjab Academy of Sciences, and Best Paper Awards from both the Indian Society of Agronomy and the Society of Economics and Development. With over 20 research publications and 50 popular articles, Dr. Gill has made significant strides in promoting sustainable agricultural practices across Punjab. His efforts have reached thousands of farmers through field demonstrations, adaptive trials, and training camps, making a tangible difference in the lives of those who rely on agriculture.
In a congratulatory message, Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University, expressed immense pride in Dr. Gill’s achievements, stating, “Dr. Jasvir Singh Gill’s dedication to agricultural innovation exemplifies the spirit of PAU. His contributions have not only advanced agronomy but also brought immense pride to our institution.
