The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will hold the two-day “Chrysanthemum Show” in the premises of Dr Manmohan Singh Auditorium, PAU, Ludhiana on December 6 and 7. The Department of Floriculture and Landscaping in association with the Estate Organization will hold the show which will be inaugurated by Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, PAU on December 6 at 2.30 pm. Dedicated to a renowned Punjabi poet Bhai Vir Singh who had ample love for flowers, the show will hold competition for the individuals, amateurs, institutions and flower lovers. There will be 11 classes (incurved, reflexed, intermediate, spider, decorative, single/semi double, pompon/button, anemone, spoon, etc.) for competition in the show in Japanese and Korean varieties of chrysanthemum, the Queen of Autumn.

Giving details, Dr Parminder Singh, Head, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, is a leading center of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Government of India, for conducting research work on the flower crops including germplasm collection of chrysanthemum. The department has a collection of nearly 200 varieties of chrysanthemum and released 17 varieties for loose flower, cut flower, pot production and garden decoration, he added. This year, department has introduced 19 new varieties of multiflora, Korean and decorative group which will be displayed in this show, he informed, while disclosing that chrysanthemum ranked second in the international flower market. The major aim of this show is to make people aware of the beauty of chrysanthemum flowers, and its suitability for commercial growing and landscape use, he said.
