The PAU- Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Hoshiarpur, under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Ludhiana, and ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone-I, Ludhiana, organized an intensive training programme on 14.06.2024 soybean cultivation. This event, aimed at promoting advanced crop cultivation and plant protection techniques, was conducted on the KVK campus as part of the cluster frontline demonstrations initiative.
Dr. Prabhjot Kaur, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection) at KVK Hoshiarpur, welcomed the attendees and outlined the objectives of the soybean frontline demonstrations.
Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training) at KVK Hoshiarpur, emphasized the significance of the training programme, focusing on the cultivation of the improved soybean variety, SL 958. Dr. Bons highlighted soybean’s high value due to its diverse applications in food, feed, and industry. He noted the increasing popularity of soybean cultivation in Hoshiarpur’s sub-mountainous regions due to its low water and pesticide requirements and resistance to wild animal damage.
The programme featured technical lectures from KVK Hoshiarpur experts. Sh. Gurpratap Singh, Associate Professor (Agronomy), Dr. Prabhjot Kaur, and Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), provided insights on improved crop production practices, fertilizer and weed management, pest identification and integrated pest management for soybean pests like hairy caterpillar, tobacco caterpillar, pod borer, and whitefly. Additionally, they discussed the use of machinery for soybean sowing and harvesting and the potential for soybean processing.
Participants received critical inputs, including soybean seeds, weedicides, and PAU literature, to support the successful implementation of the demonstrated practices.
The event proceedings were conducted by Dr. Karamvir Singh Garcha, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science) at KVK Hoshiarpur, who concluded the programme by thanking the experts for their valuable contributions and the farmers for their active participation.
