Under the guidance of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, and ICAR-ATARI, Zone I, Ludhiana, PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Gurdaspur, conducted a training programme on “Cultivation of Oilseed Crops” on 8th October 2024 at the KVK campus. The programme, part of the “Cluster Frontline Demonstrations on Rabi Oilseed Crops 2024-25” project, was attended by 60 farmers and farm women, providing them with technical expertise in the successful cultivation of gobhi sarson.
Dr. Sarbjit Singh Aulakh, Associate Director (Training) at KVK Gurdaspur, warmly welcomed the participants, emphasizing the potential of oilseed production for increasing farm income. He also highlighted the various vocational training and outreach programmes offered by KVK to encourage farmers to explore new income-generating opportunities.
Dr. Satwinderjit Kaur, Associate Professor (Soil Science) and the training coordinator, outlined the objectives and mandates of the project, stressing the importance of the judicious use of fertilizers, particularly sulphur, to enhance the yield and oil quality in oilseed crops.
Dr. Ravinder Singh Chhina, Professor (Agricultural Engineering), provided insights into the mechanization of oilseed crops and the processing opportunities available for farmers. Dr. Anil Kumar Khokhar, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), discussed the latest varieties of rapeseed and mustard, including their sowing methods. Dr. Rajwinder Kaur, Assistant Professor (Plant Protection), shared strategies for effective pest and disease management in oilseed crops.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Sh. Randhir Singh, a progressive organic farmer, who expressed gratitude on behalf of all participants for the valuable knowledge shared during the training.
